Abstract
Statistics show that 75% of Norwegian ship casualties are collisions and groundings. The cause is stated to be human error without any further explanation in about 80% of these incidents. Based on this background, the project tasks--model and method development, analysis of about 3000 collisions and groundings, development of a maneuvering simulator, near-miss analysis and evaluation of the idea of a data recorder for ships--were formed. The paper concludes with some general observations and recommendations for measures aimed at reductions in marine accidents.
