Abstract
Stripping is the phenomenon by which the bonding between asphalt and aggregates is broken by the action of water and traffic, and asphalt is dispersed by water. It is preferable to consider stripping as a phenomenon related to the whole of the pavement system and thus evaluate its contribution to the performance of the pavement rather than take the ordinary point of view of considering stripping only as an interfacial phenomenon between asphalt and aggregates. The bond between asphalt and aggregates is broken by the physico-chemical action of the water and traffic loading; asphalt migration takes place and stripping progresses upward from the lower part of the mixture.
