Abstract
Small cells can generally be characterized as either picocells, controlled by a pico eNodeB, or femtocells, controlled by a Home eNB (HeNB). This chapter addresses the architectural aspects specific to femtocells/HeNBs. Then the potential interference issues are analysed and some possible interference management schemes are discussed. Finally some of the Radio Frequency (RF) challenges of both HeNBs and pico eNodeBs are discussed. The main architectural aspects of HeNBs are based on the general concepts applicable to all types of Long Term Evolution (LTE) cell. Interference management is a key issue for heterogeneous network deployments of macrocells and small cells in LTE. A major factor influencing the RF requirements for pico and Home eNodeBs is the lower minimum separation distance between User Equipments (UEs) and the pico or Home eNodeBs when compared to the Wide Area eNodeB case.
