Evaluation of combined anthelmintics against Ancylostoma caninum infection in dogs

Abstract
Twenty-four dogs naturally infected with Ancylostoma caninum were divided into four groups of six animals each. Group I, II, III and IV were treated with Product A (containing praziquantel50 mg, pyranteld embonate 144 mg and febantel150 mg), Product B (containing praziquantel 50 mg, pyrantel pamoate 144 mg and fenbendazole 500 mg), Product C (containing praziquantel 25 mg and albendazole 300 mg) and Product D - a generic copy of Product A (containing praziquantel 50 mg, pyrantel pamoate 144 mg and febantel 150 mg) @ one tablet per 10 kg b.w. (manufacturers' recommendations), respectively. Eggs per gram (EPG) values and larval cultures were performed before and on day 3 and day 7 post-treatment (DPT). Examination of larval culture before and after treatment revealed that the dogs were naturally infected with A. caninum. Based on EPG values, the highest efficacy (96.17%) against A. caninum was attained, following treatment with Product A on day 3 post-treatment (PT) whereas Products B, D and C had efficacy of 66.48%, 5.63% and 5.19%, respectively. Product A was found to be 100% effective 7 DPT, whereas an efficacy of 76.21%, 66.35% and 35.21% were recorded for Products B, C and D, respectively against A. caninum 7 DPT.
