Abstract

Cf late 9 apart from the us*» of enriched uranijra as fuel and heavy water as moderator, several other stable .isotopeshave come into general usage or have been postulated for possible use in reactor technology. For example, lithium-6, by virtue of its great capture cross section for thermal neutrons and non-emission of gamma radiations in the absorption processes of the neutrons, turns out as an excellent shielding material against slow neutrons. When lithium is highly enriched in Lithium-7, the neutrons capture cross-section is greatly reduced and can be used as coolant because of its good heat transfer properties.Further, Lithium-7, can be used as a moderator in reactors
