Sowing Into Winter Judith Thompson (bio) Over the spent soil of our garden bedcircumscribed by river rockswe arc, scatter seeds of winter rye.Already in the high countrysnow gathers away from our witness. I know the sound of it, the almostsilent crystallizing, falling moistureseeding ground's frost. A tang ofexpectation scents the thinning air. I cast rye into our circlesweeping away summer,sowing into cooler days. We turn, empty.We turn, filled. There is time enough now,and if the snow is earlythere is time enough then, and even laterthere is time,enough. [End Page 104] Judith Thompson Judith Thompson, a classically trained pianist, received her bachelor's in music from Occidental College and worked as a senior executive for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and New York Philharmonic in addition to serving as an on-site evaluator for the National Endowment for the Arts. She brings to her poetry a highly developed musical ear.
