Abstract
This paper describes a systematic, widely applicable methodology for defining user requirements for system functionality and user interface capabilities. This methodology is a variation of the user centered system design approach, which focuses on the user of a system. Our methodology involves obtaining user input from questionnaires and interviews, utilizing a range of statistical techniques to analyze user data, then developing mathematical models to define user needs. This methodology was used successfully to define user requirements in a replacement for an absolute system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Advantages and disadvantages of this methodology are discussed. 6 refs., 1 fig., 3 tabs.
