Abstract
This paper compares the trial design check using the 1987 draft NAASRA bridge design specification of a composite plate web girder bridge designed to the 1976 NAASRA specification. The paper comments on the differences between the new and old rules, using an 'over stress margin' factor for comparison. The factor represents the percentage increase in design action that will cause the structural element to go into over stress (A).
