Abstract

Subsequent to the realization that endothelial cells are important regulators of vascular, immunological, and probably many other functions, endothelial cell biology has rapidly expanded into a distinct discipline. Numerous endothelial-derived factors have been identified as important contributors in the regulation of vascular tone, including relaxing or contracting substances, such as prostacyclin, nitric oxide, and endothelin.
