Abstract
This paper deals with the thermal performance of passive solar buildings in Korea. In case of residential buildings, the task, development of the exemplary patterns for the application of passive solar systems, is very crucial regarding government policies toward energy conservation following the oil crisis. There are six different types of designs for residential buildings that differ in size, which are drafted by the KIER in 1986. For post offices, there are two main principles for adopting passive solar technologies into the construction of post offices. Among these, one was designed and built by the Ministry of Communication, and another was designed by the KIER. For school buildings, there are three types of schoolroom configurations, and each design contains certain distinctive characteristics in utilization of solar energy. Considering the geographical conditions of the Korean Peninsula, it is expected that, in conclusion, passive solar systems are effective and economic when they are applied to buildings for heating systems.
