Abstract

The Ministry of Transport and Communications has assigned a special Working Group called SALAMA with the main objective to transform transport policy guidelines into practical and concrete results in Finland. The most essential aims are to cut the public costs spent on public transport and transport services for special groups, improve the quality of service in public transport, develop transport telematics, information systems, payment systems and demand responsive transport systems. The principal idea is that research and development activities and initiatives are an integrated part of Finnish transport policy. Practice has shown that it is often the institutional issues that are causing problems in the development work done for example in the field of traveller information, not the technical issues. For the covering abstract, see IRRD 490001.
