Abstract

The goal of this document is to analyze how long term change processes in the transportation system worked in the past. The following questions are addressed specifically: Under what circumstances did new forms of transportation originate? Under which conditions were outdated means of transportation superseded by new ones? How rapidly did this change process take place? Which new technology concepts were promising and which were not? To what extent is the future development of the transportation system predictable? What is the most likely development of the transportation system in the future? The emphasis in this document will be on users' wishes. The crucial role that users played in the development and introduction of new means of transportation will be demonstrated.
