Abstract

This chapter explains the internal details of a global system for mobile communications (GSM) mobile phone and some of its components in more detail. Today, apart from the speech communication, the GSM mobile phone supports many other multimedia applications, such as audio-video players, games, and so on. These functional blocks can basically be divided into two categories: the communication processing unit and the application processing unit. Firstly, the chapter considers the communication processing unit, for example, the modem functionalities that need to be implemented inside a GSM mobile. It then shows how to map those functionalities into different hardware or software blocks inside the mobile. The chapter then presents hardware block diagram of a mobile phone, and discusses GSM transmitter and receiver module, antenna, analog to digital conversion (ADC) module, connectivity modules, and memory. Controlled Vocabulary Terms GSM; mobile handsets
