Abstract
-- It was determined the activity levels of antioxidant enzymes: Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), and the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) as an indicator of lipid peroxidation in erythrocytes of 48 apparently healthy people: 24 residents of Nueva Cajamarca (Region San Martin, 856 m above sea level) and 24 residents of Lima (150 m above sea level). In Nueva Cajamarca subjects found higher levels of activity of the enzymes: catalase (0.61 0.10 k CAT / g Hb) in relation to those of Lima (0.57 0.16 k CAT / g Hb), (p <0.025) and superoxide dismutase (2142.00 2685.07 U SOD / g Hb) than in Lima (1536.62 594.18 U SOD / g Hb) (p = NS) and higher concentration of malondialdehyde (11.55 4.68 ηmol MDA / g Hb) than those obtained in Lima (11.11 3.99 ηmol MDA / g Hb) (p = NS) -- Key words: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), lipid peroxidation.
