Solving cold end boiler problems through innovative chemical technology

Abstract

It is shown how the use of a chemical neutralizing additive has become a valuable, relatively simple and quickly installed method for helping both oil- and coal-burning units prevent corrosion, increase unit availability and efficiency and reduce polluting emissions. Due to the high cost of electricity generated by oil units, they are frequently cycled between low load operation at night and higher load operation during the day. Cycling increases operational difficulties and acidic condensation problems. The use of a flue gas neutralization program could provide a significant impact of fuel conservation while minimizing the operational and emissions problems caused by acid condensation. Faced with uncertain fuel supplies and handicapped by a capital shortage, the electric utility industry can look to increased use of sophisticated chemical technology for solutions to fuel burning problems.
