Abstract
The emerging demand for cordless LANs can be satisfied by the adoption of DECT (Digital European Cordless Telecommunication) standard because of its high flexibility, high capacity, and interoperability with many backbone networks. Packet data applications need fast channel selection procedures, but the dynamic channel selection algorithm, supported by DECT, is optimized for voice calls, operating in the circuit mode, where relatively long setup times are acceptable. For this reason, we discuss the inefficiency of the DECT standard access for short messages and we propose an enhanced dynamic channel selection algorithm that allows one to reduce the access delay. The performance analysis, based on computer simulation, is also given for an integrated services scenario, where both algorithms are maintained.
