Abstract

Chapter 1 covers fusion welding processes, including: Illustrations of All Welding Processes (showing both the overall process and the details of the welding area) Advantages and Disadvantages of Each Process Overview (classification of fusion welding processes; effect of power density on weld quality, productivity, and equipment cost; materials commonly welded by each process; types of joints; welding positions) Oxyacetylene Welding (including chemical reactions, flame temperature distribution, and three types of flames: neutral, reducing and oxidizing) Shielded Metal Arc Welding (including four functions of electrode covering: protection, deoxidation, arc stabilization, and metal addition) Gas-Tungsten Arc Welding (including effect of shielding gas and three types of polarity: DCEN, DCEP and AC) Plasma Arc Welding (including arc initiation, melt-in mode and keyholing mode) Gas-Metal Arc Welding (including effect of shielding gas, and three types of metal transfer: globular, spray and short-circuit) Flux-Core Arc Welding Submerged Arc Welding Electroslag Welding Deposition Rates of All Processes Above Electron Beam Welding (including effect of ambient pressure on beam dispersion) Laser Beam Welding (including CO2, YAG and diode lasers, reflectivity, effect of shielding gas, and laser-assisted arc welding) 31 Illustrations, 26 References, and 11 Exercise Problems Friction stir welding is covered in Chapter 15.
