Abstract

Transverse interactions between optical modes and surface acoustic waves (SAW) in optical waveguides with acousto-optic effects yield optical mode conversions and switching with high speed responses of nano seconds. Eigen mode characteristics of electromagnetic fields in A-O waveguides are studied for transverse A-O interactions, by Mathieu function expansion method. Mode couplings in optical devices consisting of two parallel A-O waveguides by transverse SAW, are discussed based on eigen mode characteristics of transverse A-O interactions.
