Abstract
The report examines systems whose principal aim is to provide passengers using public transport with information regarding traffic. Projects with the object of improving conventional information such as direction signs, bus stop signs, timetables, etc., are therefore included while systems which concentrate on information processing by traffic undertakings, such as radio communication, fare collection and signal priorities, etc., are omitted, although they may account for a large proportion of the information processed. The last chapter of the report examines integration of different systems. The layout of the report is as follows: (1) general description and reasons for introduction; (2) technical design and integration; (3) reactions of passengers, (4) reactions of staff, (5) reactions of transport undertaking; (6) cost; (7) other experiments and experiences; (8) suppliers' comments. It should be borne in mind that the emphasis is placed on evaluation of the utility of the systems and their acceptance by the passengers; although there may be technical shortcomings, these will have been eliminated before mass production begins. Cost data are also unreliable. In many cases certain important cost items have not been included. (TRRL)
