Status of the Tevatron collider: Performance and upgrades

Abstract

This paper describes the status of Fermilab’s Tevatron collider and the planned upgrades, collectively known as Fermilab III, to the Fermilab accelerator complex. These upgrades will increase the available proton‐antiproton luminosities from their current levels of 1.6×1030 cm−2 sec−1 to better than 5.0×1031 cm−2 sec−1 and will increase the energy to 2 TeV in the center of mass. Fermilab III includes installation of cold compressors and electrostatic separators in the Tevatron, Antiproton Source improvements, doubling of the existing Linac output energy, and building of the new Main Injector accelerator. The expected timescales for the upgrades and their contributions to luminosity improvement are outlined. The Tevatron collider was recently started up after a three year hiatus and experience with this startup is described.
