The Coverage of UK-Owned Companies by the Directive on European Works Councils

On September 22, 1994 the EU Council of Ministers gave final approval to directive on European Works Councils under the social poicy protocol. Its coverage has subsequently been extended, by decision of the Joint Commitee of the European Economic Area, to all member states of the EEA, excluding the UK. The directive requires any organisation with at least 1, 000 employees in the EEA member states covered, and with undertaking at least 150 in at least two of three member states, to establish arrangements for employee information and consultationat European level.
