Abstract

This chapter discusses genomic analysis with a focus on the gene identification. The two approaches (template methods and look-up methods) in the development of sequence analysis techniques for gene identification are noted. An overall gene identification protocol is presented. These include masking repetitive DNA, database search, codon bias detection, and detection of functional sites in DNA. Online genome databases are surveyed and numerous Internet resources for gene identification are listed. Applications of various gene identification algorithms accessible via Web servers, such as GeneFinder, GeneID, GeneMark, Grail, Procrustes and WebGene are described.
