Abstract
This article describes how the Zeleznice Slovenskej Republiky (ZSR) began the modernization of its marshaling yards in 2009. As a first part of the project, the marshaling yard Zilina-Teplicka was equipped with a modern automation system based on the modular, PLC-based interlocking platform Alister. The Alister system will be used for fully automatic control of hump yard procedures and as an interlocking (SIL 2) for the marshaling yard to ensure the safety of shunting movements. The system was put into operation in March 2012 and this activity represents an essential step for future-oriented investments in railway infrastructure and the deployment of modern technologies in marshaling yards in Slovakia.
