Abstract

The availability of scientific and intellectual works freely through scientists’ personal web sites, digital \nuniversity archives or through the electronic print (eprint) archives of major scientific institutions has \nradically changed the process of scientific communication within the last decade. The “Open Access” \n(OA) initiative is having an impact upon the scientific communication process that is largely based on \npublishing in scientific periodicals. It also interests researchers, university administrators, publishers, \nusers and institutions providing information services. This paper summarizes the current OA \ndevelopments and discusses the impact of OA on scientific communication on social sciences and \nperiodicals publishing.
