Abstract

This guide explains the role of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) in modern data, voice and video networks. Non-theoretical in approach, the focus is on how ATM protocols operate in both local area and wide area networks. Topics covered include the architecture of ATM networks, broadband ISDN, the ATM adaptation layer which serves as the interface between user applications and the ATM cell-based operations, analysis of ATM switching elements, traffic management and SONET.
