Abstract

The preventive maintenance concept for asphaltic highway surface care is intended to give all areas of the Kansas Department of Transportation the necessary procedures for such work. The initial development of a Surface Maintenance Management System should originate when a particular section of roadway is initially opened to traffic, and continue throughout the use of the pavement. The important factors affecting the success of these maintenance practices is the timing of various phases of operations such as surface restoration, fogging, and resurfacing. The key to timing of all operation is rigid field inspections throughout the system annually, making it possible to schedule work at the appropriate time.
