Abstract

A workshop on vehicle classification was organised by the Austrailan Road Research Board to bring together representatives from a wide range of organisations interested in this topic. The lack of consistent criteria for vehicle classification was seen as a real problem for research, equipment development and the collection and application of data. Short discussion papers were presented, covering a wide spectrum of interest groups and perspectives. The workshop also included discussion sessions on user needs, proposals for uniform categories and the technology for collecting vehicle data. The workshop did not produce a neat set of conclusions. Nevertheless the papers contain a wealth of information, and the discussions indicate the directions in which vehicle classification systems should progress. The following papers were presented at the workshop: Vehicle Classification--Issues to be Discussed (Hoban, CJ); Vehicle Classification in Tasmania (Lock, JB); Vehicle Classification Nees and Methods of Data Collection (Vincent, EN); Vehicle Definitions--A Traffic Management View (Sach, ND); Vehicle Classification for Rural Traffic Research (Hoban, CH); Axle Load Measurement (Donald, GS); Heavy Vehicle Data Collection at DMR Checking Stations (Lardner-Smith, P); Derivation of Design Loads for Bridges and Pavements (Fenwick, JM); The Significance of Axle Load Data in Pavement Design (Kinder, DF).
