Abstract

Computer models available for analyzing traffic operations problems are outlined and their use in proposing solutions and analyzing problems is described. Many distinct models were reviewed and classified by the geometrics that the model analyzes. They are as follows: intersection models, arterial models, network models, freeway models, and corridor models. The Federal Highway Administration is sponsoring a variety of models: Arterial Analysis Package models, the TRAF models, the TRANSYT and SIGOP III programs, and the FREQ models. It is noted that a problem to be addressed is the lack of frequent use of computer models in traffic engineering. Effort has been made to establish the credibility of the models through demonstration and testing. Training courses and implementation support could help make the models easier to use.
