Abstract
The Milwaukee County Transit system (MCTS) created in 1975 which operates 560 buses over 65 routes, is described. Under public ownership, the transit system provieds safe, reliable and affordable transit sevices. The operating policies of the system are established by the county executive and the board of supervisiors of Milwakee County. The implementation of the policies as well as the day-to-day operation of the system is the charge of Milwaukee Transport Services, Incorporated. MTS is a private, nonprofit transit management corporation, and the transit system's 1,500 employees, are employees of MTS. The advantages of this organizational structuure are noted. The high standards of the transit systems operations, and its national recognition in winning awards are also noted. Its many operating innovations are pointed out.
