Abstract

This chapter presents selected special applications of pharmacoepidemiology, which include studies of drug utilization; evaluating and improving physician prescribing; special methodological issues in pharmacoepidemiology of vaccine safety; and pharmacoepidemiologic studies of devices. Studies of drug-induced birth defects; pharmacoepidemiology and risk management; the use of pharmacoepidemiology to study medication errors; Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Sentinel Initiative; and comparative effectiveness research are the other studies. The chapter also presents this information using a standard format, focusing on clinical and methodological problems, examples of solutions, and perspectives on the future. Each application section then ends with a case example and key points.
