AGGRESSION BEHIND THE BEAUTY: A PSYCHOANALYTIC STUDY ON OSCAR WILDE’S SALOME (1894)

The major problem of this study is to reveal that physical beauty is not always accompanied by mental and spiritual beauty based on the structural elements and to analyze the play based on the psychoanalytic perspective. In analyzing Salome, the writer uses qualitative method and psychoanalytic perspective. The object of the study is Oscar Wilde’s Salome translated in 1893. The primary data source is the script of the play Salome itself and the secondary data source is the other sources related to the analysis such as the author’s biography, books of literary theory and psychological books, especially psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud. The method of data collection is library research. The technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis. Having analyzed this movie, the writer draws some conclusions as follows. First, based on the structural analysis, the author successfully delivers the moral message through the excellent unity of structural element. Second, based on the Psychoanalytic analysis shows that men revere women’s beauty without knowing whether she has a good behavior or not. A beautiful woman is not always a good woman in fact. Finally, the excessive lust to a thing always has a bad impact and bad personality brings her falling away.
