Abstract
The Hungarian capital is characterized by relatively low automobile ownership so that over 85% of daily journeys are by public transit operated by Budapest Transport Undertaking. Route lengths of each mode are: Streetcars, 185 km; buses, 639 km; trolley buses, 50 km; commuter railways, 109 km; rapid transit, 23 km. Some details about facilities of each of these modes are given. In the near future plans call for expansion of the rapid transit system by 10 km, conversion of commuter railways to full rapid transit operation, and development of high-speed light rail transit from existing tram lines. Motor and trolley buses will increasingly act as feeders for the rapid transit services and will serve areas of lower population. While auto ownership is increasing, there are growing restrictions on their use in the center city.
