Abstract
The author evaluates the properties of high workability concrete mixes (i.e. Mixes which may be placed without compaction). Developments in admixtures, and in particular superplasticisers, allow the composition of flowable mixes with slump of 150-200 mm with moderate water content. This development offers applications for fluidised concrete as an alternative to conventional concrete placed with vibrators or other means of compaction. Details are given of typical compositions of flowable concrete and also requirements of the high workability phase which concern its flowability, uniformity, stability and consistency. (TRRL)
