Abstract
The structures of the Severn Crossing have been strengthened to provide adequate safety for increased vehicular loading following changes in road transport in the 1970s. There has also been fatigue damage to the steel decks and to the hangers on the Severn Bridge. The paper describes the structural assessments undertaken and outlines the scope of the remedial works which were then planned. The basis for the decision by the Department of Transport to proceed with the work and the organizational strategy adopted are summarised. (A)
