Abstract
Kurt Lampe's The Birth of Hedonism: The Cyrenaic Philosophers and Pleasure as a Way of Life is a welcome addition to the literature on ancient hedonism and to our understanding of a lesser-known movement in Greek ethics. It is the first monograph on Cyrenaic ethics in English and, as Lampe claims, the first systematic reconstruction of Cyrenaic ethics within its own historical contexts in any language. (2-3)
