Abstract

ARCADY 6 (Assessment of Roundabout CApacity and DelaY Version 6) is the latest version of the internationally-recognised computer program for predicting capacities, queue lengths and delays (both queueing and geometric) at non-signalised roundabouts and mini-roundabouts. It can also be used to predict accident frequencies or indices for a particular layout from information about traffic flow and site data. The program is used as a tool by junction design engineers to help them to assess their designs. It is used primarily for modelling peak periods and can be applied to any single-island roundabout with three to seven arms and any mini-roundabout with three or four arms. ARCADY can model junctions in countries where drivers drive on the left or the right. This application guide is specifically for those countries where drivers drive on the right-hand-side of the road (i.e. 'drive on the right'). An alternative application guide (AG49) for 'drive on the left' countries is also available. The ARCADY 6 user guide describes all the features this new version of the program has to offer which includes a variety of analysis improvements such as a new Pelican Crossing model for both standard and mini-roundabouts and the reporting of the estimated delay for arriving vehicles within a given time period. Other major changes to ARCADY include the ability to produce customisable reports with embedded graphics, completely new graphical analysis options, multiple demand flow sets, and various new user interface features such as filename history, revised queue animations, and a revised context-sensitive help system. Other topics in the guide include a description of the theory and research incorporated in ARCADY, how an ARCADY model should be specified and the way data is entered using its graphical user interface (including guidance on how to measure data). Also described is the output and how it should be interpreted. A number of examples have been included to aid the understanding of different roundabouts and the modelling problems they pose. (A)
