Abstract

AIM OF STUDY: To evaluate the rational use of Computed Tomographic Pulmonary Angiography (CTPA) in the diagnostic evaluation of adult patients with a clinical suspicion of Acute Pulmonary Thrombo-embolism (PE) at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital (IALCH). PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To assess the appropriateness of CTPA utility in evaluating patients suspected of having PE on clinical grounds. SECONDARY OBJECTIVES: To compare the pre-test probability scores to the outcomes of the CTPA examinations. To determine the diagnostic yield of CTPA in our setting. To describe the demographic and clinical profiles for patients diagnosed with PE. To evaluate the diagnostic yield of alternate diagnoses.
