The purpose of the study was to examine how high school students in Kenya define and discuss democracy. The aim was further to examine which factors, both positive and negative that are assumed to affect the democratization in their country. The goal was to contribute to a critical debate around how the concept of democracy is defined in existing theories and how it is implemented by development policys. The empirical material is collected from six focus groups where 44 students were interviewed and asked to discuss the given topic. The focus groups were supplemented with 102 surveys. The findings can be summarized in three areas. 1, The definition of democracy is not homogenous, however the fundamental starting point is that democracy is something positive and worth striving for. 2, When democracy is mentioned so is the concept of development. The relationship between these furthers the discussion to illustrate how a democracy should function. 3, There is a number of identified issues that are perceived to obstructed the democratic process, such as corruption and tribalism.
