Abstract

The general road safety situation of highway networks was evaluated through investigation of accident patterns and causes. Some sections of roadway with high accident rates were found using road black spot identification technology. Accident causes related to highway features and traffic factors were analyzed. The characteristics of typical black spots were studied from the perspective of highway features and traffic devices. Operating speed of vehicles on highways was measured to help explain why high speed driving was the most common primary accident cause.
