Abstract

The proposed merger of Canadian National Railway Company (CN) and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (BNSF) would create the largest rail system in North America. The proposal has garnered enough concern for the U.S. Surface Transportation Board (STB) to examine the broader scope of where rail mergers have brought the industry and what direction it will take if the BNSF-CN merger were to take place. The STB will hold a hearing in March to discuss the matter.
