This paper takes a look at Dale Jorgenson's 1982 paper, The Role of Energy in the Productivity Slowdown. I agree with his conclusion regarding the slowdown in productivity in the U.S and elsewhere, but express my disagreement with his assertion that a sectoral approach is most essential for elaborating and testing the energy hypothesis. I also take issue with his assertions about the dismal implications for productivity growth in this decade.
