Abstract
At the beginning of the dry season in 1969, a local sorghum cultivar was direct drilled at 20 kg seed/ha, irrigated, and given 0-180 kg N/ha at sowing and after each harvest and cut when the average height of plants given intermediate rates of N was 90 cm. At all harvests, forage yields increased significantly with up to 90 kg N/ha which gave a total DM yield over 3 cuts of 10.16 t/ha compared with 4.84 t in the untreated control. Application of >90 kg N/ha tended to reduce yields and response to N differed between cuts. The optimum economic application rate was 253 kg/ha or 84.3 kg/ha cut and it was concluded that direct drilling was suitable for forage production during the dry season
