Abstract
During stage 3 of parturition, the fetal membranes or placenta should be expelled. In the horse, the placenta is considered to be abnormally retained beyond 3 hours post-foaling. A retained placenta may predispose a mare to metritis with subsequent laminitis and thus should be removed in a timely fashion. Retained placentas are more common with dystocias, abortions, and after induction of labor. The incidence of retained placenta in the general horse population is 2–10% of foalings with higher rates reported in draft horses. This chapter discusses step by step procedure for performing the removal of retained placenta in mare. It also discusses necessary conditions for performing the removal of retained placenta in mare.
