Abstract
This paper discusses recent developments made by the Department of Transport in a method to assess the total cost of major road maintenance works where total cost is defined to include both works and user costs. The paper has the following structure: (1) economic approach to maintenance assessment; (2) the GUADRO 2 method of assessment; (3) some GUADRO 2 results: (4) future application of cost-effectiveness methods. This paper outlines the main uses of the program and the traffic engineering/economics relations incorporated within it. It is intended to present some sensitivity tests and indicate the implications of minimising life cycle costs. This paper was also presented at Seminar K. See TRIS 380313. (Author)
