Abstract Following a brief discussion of the possibilities offered by X-ray spectroscopy at various values of resolving power (E/ΔE), the spectroscopic capabilities of a number of future missions are presented. The possible roles of Charge Coupled Devices (CCD’s), Microcalorimeters, Diffraction Grating and Bragg Crystal Spectrometers are then evaluated.
