Public transport use in metropolitan areas

This paper examines existing use of public transport in metropolitan areas. Metropolitan Adelaide is used as a specific example. Results of a work travel survey conducted in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney are discussed. This survey examined in depth the two types of public transport patronage - 'choice' and 'captive'. Likely future patronage is discussed in terms of the availability of cars; the form of future urban development; and technological innovations (a).
