Abstract
Testing maize cultivars for resistance to C. partellus could be better done by infesting them at 2.5 wk after germination as different components of resistance were expressed at this stage. The infestation with neonate larvae resulted in higher foliage damage and greater dead hearts than with egg masses. The regression estimate of all the cultivars for functional plant loss index on larval dry weight indicated that plants of CM 500 possess antibiosis and tolerance, whereas JH 3459 showed tolerance against larval infestation. Larval survival (60.0%) and leaf area fed (107.2 mm2) were less on cultivar CM 500.
