Abstract

The present study was undertaken in All India Coordinated Research Project on Poultry Breeding (Rural Poultry Production) to evaluate various germplasm developed for rural poultry production for their suitability in North-East Region. A total of 702 fertile eggs of CARI Shyama were procured from CARI, Izatnagar (U.P.). The hatching of eggs were performed at the Institute and 350 chicks were hatched out. At 8 weeks of age 50% of all the survived chicks were distributed to the farmers of kobrapara village of West Tripura district for rearing in backyard system. The growth and production performance of CARI Shyama was studied at both the locations viz. farm and field conditions. The mean body weights of CARI Shyama at 12 weeks of age were: 873.34±22.70 g, 725.59±27.09 g and 793.39±19.00 g, respectively at the farm level and the corresponding body weights at field level were: 813.02±27.64 g, 594.53±19.19 g and 690.77±20.04 g, respectively for male, female and overall mean. Significantly higher mean body weights were observed at farm level in comparison to field level upto 20 weeks of age. The cumulative feed consumption upto 6 weeks of age was: 0.969 kg. The feed consumption per day between 19–20 and 39–40 weeks of age were: 97.0 g and 158.500.80 g per bird, respectively. The age at sexual maturity was: 193.00±0.49 days and 201.26±1.87 days, respectively at farm and field conditions. The estimated mean of the shape index, percent albumin ratio, albumin index, percent yolk ratio, yolk index, shell thickness (mm) and Haugh unit at 40 weeks of age at the farm were: 75.89±0.47, 53.40±0.41, 0.057±0.001, 31.27±0.34, 0.42±0.004, 0.31±0.001 and 81.70±1.19, respectively.
