Smoking and passive smoking among residents in Shanghai.

Abstract

Objective To investigate the prevalence of smoking, quitting smoking and passive smoking among residents aged over 15 years in Shanghai. Methods The data of 2007 Shanghai non-communicable diseases and behavioral risk factors surveillances survey were used for analysis. 17,174 subjects (male 8072, female 9102) aged 15 years and above were involved. The descriptive analysis index included general smoking rate, current smoking rate, regular smoking rate, heavy smoking rate, quitting smoking rate, successful quitting smoking rate, passive smoking rate. Results Rates of general smoking, current smoking, regular smoking and heavy smoking among male residents aged over 15 years were 61.8%, 54.8%, 48.5% and 28.3% respectively and those among females were 1.2%,1.0%,0.7% and 0.2%.Rates of quitting smoking and successful quitting smoking were 11.3% and 8.6%.The level of exposure for passive smokers was 43.1%.The places of exposure for passive smokers were mainly at workplace and home. Conclusion The prevalence of smoking and passive smoking in Shanghai were comparatively high, while rate of quitting smoking was low. The tobacco control in Shanghai is still facing the great challenge.
