Abstract
The general problem of skid resistance control consists of the three phases: measurement, comparison, and correction. Existing friction testers are classified and discussed in accordance with their mode of operation. The principal factors that have a bearing on the several types of measured coefficients are dealt with in two groups. The first group includes factors that influence the magnitude of the frictional coupling between road surface and tire (or slider). The second group includes the design factors that influence the transmission of the tire-ground force to the force or torque transducer and that give rise to system errors. The factors that must be controlled in skid resistance tests are enumerated, and limits are given to which the factors should be held.
